A 1U-6690 Socket Wrench As 1 Note: The same assembly procedure is used for the front differential pinion and for the rear differential pinion.
Illustration 1 g01275967Note: If you raise the temperature of the bearing cones, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a suitable press to reset the bearing cones. Lubricate the bearing cones with SAE 30 gear oil after the bearing cones have cooled to prevent rust on the bearing cones.Note: If you lower the temperature of the bearing cups, allow the parts to reach a uniform temperature. Then use a driver or a suitable press to reset the bearing cups. Remove any frost and wipe the bearing cups dry. Lubricate the bearing cups with SAE 30 gear oil to prevent rust on the bearing cups.
Install bearing cups (5) and (11) in pinion housing (1).Note: Reset the bearing cups with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniform temperature.
Install the O-ring on pinion housing (1).
Install bearing cone (7) on pinion shaft (12). Bearing cone (7) must be seated against the shoulder on pinion shaft (12).Note: Reset the bearing cone with a suitable driver after the mating parts have reached a uniform temperature.
Install pinion shaft (12) in pinion housing (1). Press bearing cone (10) onto pinion shaft (12). Allow a small amount of end play to remain. Lubricate bearing cone (10). Lubricate washer (9) and nut (8). Install washer (9) and nut (8).Note: The following steps are for adjusting the preload for the differential pinion. There are two acceptable methods that can be used. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Differential Pinion Preload - Adjust" for the other method.
Position the pinion assembly vertically in a holding fixture. Secure pinion housing (1) in a holding fixture. Install a bolt into the end of pinion shaft (12). The bolt head should be flush with pinion shaft (12).Note: Use a bolt that will not bottom out in pinion shaft (12).
While you rotate pinion shaft (12) with the torque wrench. Tighten nut (8) until the reading on the torque wrench corresponds with the value in Table 2.
Table 2
Pinion Rolling Torque
Actual Torque at the Pinion
New Bearings 0.9 to 1.8 N m (8 to 16 lb in)
Used Bearings 0.45 to 0.9 N m (4 to 8 lb in) Make sure that there is zero end play of pinion shaft (12).
If the pinion rolling torque exceeds the specification, back off nut (8) by 1/8 turn and reseat bearing cone (10) and washer (9) against nut (8). Perform Step 6.
When the torque that is needed to turn the pinion is correct, stake nut (8). To stake nut (8), peen the collar that is on the nut into the key slot in pinion shaft (12). See Illustration 2 for the correct tooling and for the correct dimensions.Note: The nut may be reused if the collar is not cracked during removal or during restaking.
