6     7S-8554     O-Ring Seal    Remove the existing bearing cones and bearing cage from the differential assembly and use the following preload procedure.

Install the new 5D-7453 Bearing Cone (1) and the new 1B-6577 Bearing Cone (2) onto the pinion assembly.
Lubricate the new bearing cones with a light machine oil.
Install the pinion assembly into the differential carrier assembly.
Install the 196-4478 Bearing Cage (3) into the differential carrier assembly.Note: Install the bearing cage without shims and without the 9X-7395 Seal As (5) and the 7S-8554 O-Ring Seal (6) .

Install four 0S-1585 Bolts (4) in the bolt holes that are marked with an "X". Refer to Illustration 2.Note: Use new bolts for the bearing preload procedure.
Tighten the four 0S-1585 Bolts (4) in an X pattern to a torque of 16.9 1.7 N m (150 15 lb in). Rotate the pinion assembly by a minimum of two revolutions.
Repeat Step 6 until the torque of the four bolts remains constant.
Tighten the four 0S-1585 Bolts (4) in an X pattern to a torque of 33.9 3.4 N m (300.00 30.00 lb in). Rotate the pinion assembly by a minimum of two revolutions.
Repeat Step 8 until the torque of the four bolts remains constant.
Loosen the four bolts in order to remove all torque. Rotate the pinion assembly by two revolutions.
Tighten the four 0S-1585 Bolts (4) in an X pattern to a torque of 11.3 0.6 N m (100 5 lb in). Rotate the pinion assembly by a minimum of two revolutions.
Repeat Step 11 until the torque of the four bolts remains constant.
Measure the depth of the holes at the locations that are marked Y and Z. Refer to Illustration 2. Average the two dimensions and record the calculated dimension.
Remove the four bolts in the holes that are marked with an "X". Remove the bearing cage.
Measure the thickness of the flange of the bearing cage at the locations (small holes) that are marked Y and Z. Average the two dimensions and record the calculated dimension.
Subtract the measurement that was calculated in Step 15 from the measurement that was calculated in Step 13 and record the calculated dimension.
Add 0.025 0.013 mm (0.0010 0.0005 inch) of shims if using a 8X-7775 Differential Carrier As to the calculated dimension from Step 16 and record the dimension.
Add 0.152 0.013 mm (0.0060 0.0005 inch) of shims if using a 246-6035 Carrier As to the calculated dimension from Step 16 and record the dimension.
Install the seals on the 196-4478 Bearing Cage (3) .
