A gear-type balancer is provided on this engine to counteract vertical inertia forces of the connecting rods and pistons. The balancer counteracts these forces by means of weights (balance gears) rotating at twice engine speed. If these rotating weights are properly installed, they cancel the unbalanced forces; but if not properly installed, they may actually add to the connecting rod and piston intertia forces, thus increasing engine vibration.One rotating balancer is located at the right front of the engine and the other is located at the left rear. The front balancer is driven by an idler gear which in turn is driven by the crankshaft gear. The rear balancer gear is driven by the camshaft gear cluster which is driven by the crankshaft gear.Removal And Installation
1. Remove the front accessory drive housing as described in the topic, FRONT ACCESSORY DRIVE.2. Remove the oil pan and flywheel housing as described in the covering topics.3. Support the engine on its left side.
1-Balancer gear. 2-Thrower. 3-Retainer.4. Position the balancer as illustrated.5. Remove the throwers (2) and (5) as described in the topic, CRANKSHAFT.
4-Balancer gear. 5-Thrower.6. The balancer gear shafts are pressed into the block and can be removed and replaced if necessary.7. Before installing a new balancer gear shaft, chill the shaft cool enough to allow .002" to .003" shrinkage.8. Using a soft hammer, drive the shaft into the block. The distance between the face of the block and the end of the balancer shaft is 2.684"-2.688".9. Install earlier type replacement bearings so that the seam is aligned with center of the weighted side of gear. Later replacement bearings need no alignment.10. Install the front balancer gear referring to the topic, FRONT ACCESSORY DRIVE for the correct timing procedure. See the topic, SPECIFICATIONS, for the correct bearing clearance and retainer bolt torque.11. Install the rear balancer gear referring to the topic, TIMING GEARS, for the correct timing procedure.
