The 423-1236 Cam Bearing Installation and Removal Tool is designed to install cam bearings by utilizing the dowel holes and top surface of the block. This aligns the tool for a repeatable and efficient press of the bearing to the proper depth without possible bore damage caused by misalignment. A removal mandrel is also included that allows the bearing to be pressed out with the same alignment to eliminate bore damage.References

Figure 1To set up the tool for bearing installation or removal, it is required that the tool be attached to the appropriate hydraulic power supply. The 1U7524 air powered hydraulic power unit is recommended.

Inspect the bearing bore for burrs or contamination before installing the bearing. A light coating of clean oil will help the bearing press in smoothly.

Place a new bearing on the installation mandrel. Make sure that the oil passage is on the same center line as the cylinder and 90 degrees from the oil port on the engine block top deck as shown in Figure 3.

Place the tool on the top deck of the block and locate it in the dowel holes. Tighten the Tee retainer screw. This will keep the press fixture secure during the press process.

Activate the power supply and observe the cylinder as it presses the bearing into the bore. Verify that the bearing does not turn off its orientation. The bearing should be pressed into the center of the bore.Note: The cylinder will press the bearing in short steps. This is normal for this type of power supply.

Verify that the bearing is located to the proper depth by squirting a small amount of clean oil down the oil passage on the top deck. The oil will run out of the lube holes in the bearing quickly.
Repeat the process on the remaining bearings.
To remove the old bearing, remove the assembly mandrel from the cylinder. Place the removal mandrel all the way into the bearing bore. Repeat steps 3 and 4.Inspection and Maintenance Section
Inspection
Inspect and clean all of the parts on the Cam Bearing R&I Tool before each use. Contaminants can cause rapid engine wear and shortened component life.If components are worn or damaged, the components must be replaced.
Inspect tooling prior to each use for damage, bending, nicks, burrs, dents, cracks, hydraulic leaks, bent, or worn parts.
Inspect the polyurethane cover on the installation mandrel for imbedded debris or damage.
Do not use if any holes are elongated or deformed.
Do not use if hardware is damaged or missing.
Check for cracks and damaged or galled threads.
Inspect the disassembly mandrel for deformation. Repair or replace if necessary.
Have the tool inspected annually by an approved dealership inspector.Maintenance
A seal kit is available for the 360-6953 Cylinder . This is available from the Cat part distribution system as part number 361-4312.Cleaning
