The PTO Adapter Assembly P/N 288-8960 needs to be inspected and possibly replaced on the products listed below. The existing PTO Adapter Assembly can cause the PTO Drive to fail. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 20Jun2008 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
Rework Instructions are serial number range specific. Read and understand the Rework Procedure before beginning work.
FDB00105 - 00496 were built with the 293-4571 Guard Assembly. The 293-4571 Guard Assembly on these machines may have been replaced by the 300-4657 Guard Assembly and 300-4658 Plate Assembly as part of a rework performed under program PI31492. FDB00105 - 00496 machines that still have the 293-4571 Guard Assembly should have the 293-4571 Guard Assebmly reworked and claimed as part of Program PI31492.
FDB00497 - 00752 were built with the 300-4657 Guard Assembly and 300-4658 Plate Assembly.

Rework Instructions:
Remove the (14) 300-4657 Guard As. (engine side). Save the (14) 300-4657 Guard As., 3 ? 5M3062 Bolts and 3 ? 9L9132 Washers for reassembly.

Remove the 276-3210 Shaft Gp-Drive-Pump.
Remove the (1) 5T1009 Yoke.

Remove the front 9P-0356 Bearing-Spider of the 300-3307 Joint Gp. from the (1) 301-5186 Yoke. Save the bolts for reinstallation.
Remove the (1) 301-5186 Yoke and save for reinstallation if not damaged during removal.

Remove the (2) 288-8960 Adapter As. and (3) 283-0746 Washer-Thrust. Save the 4 - 1F-7958 Nut-Full (1/2-13-THD) and 4 - 5P-8245 Washer-Hard for reassembly.
Inspect (2) 288-8960 Adapter As. to ensure when the adapter is installed on the engine, with the "TOP" marking at the 12 O'clock position, the non-grooved portion of the bearing is between the 2 O'clock and 5 O'clock position when viewed from behind the engine looking forward.
If the bearing is not oriented correctly, the 288-8960 Adapter As. should be replaced. Another option is to carefully press out the bearing and replace with a new 315-1409 bearing ensuring the orientation is correct as shown in Image 1.3.1 below, with the non-grooved portion in the 2 - 5 O'clock position and the oil holes aligned with the oil passages in the adapter. The bearing requires no machining after installation.

Install the new (9) 109-5722 Seal-Lip and new (10) 109-5721 Seal-Dust into the (2) 288-8960 Adapter As.
Install the (11) 3F5792 Seal-Oring onto the (2) 288-8960 Adapter As.
