Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin. At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the cooling system pressure cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the cooling system pressure cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
Note: Install caps and plugs in order to prevent system contamination.
Drain the coolant from the radiators into a suitable container so that the level of the radiators are below the level of the expansion tanks.

Remove bolts (1), the washers, and right cover (2) .
Repeat Step 2 for the opposite cover (3) .

Disconnect hose assemblies (4) and (5) from expansion tank (6) .
Disconnect sensor harness assembly (7) and (8) from expansion tank (6) .
Open the hood in order to access the lower portion of the expansion tank.
Remove bolts (11) and the washers that secure hose assembly (9). Disconnect hose assembly from the tank.
Repeat Step 7 for hose assembly (10) on the opposite tank.

Attach Tooling (A) to expansion tank (6).
Attach a suitable lifting device to Tooling (A). The expansion tank weighs approximately 127 kg (280 lb). Attach the lifting device to a suitable crane.

Remove bolts and washers (12), and (13) that secure expansion tank (6) to the hood.
Remove expansion tank (6) from the truck.Installation Procedure

Attach Tooling (A) to expansion tank (6). Attach a suitable lifting device to the expansion tank. The expansion tank weighs approximately 127 kg (280 lb).

Position the expansion tank on the hood. Install bolts and washers (12), and (13) in order to secure expansion tank (6) .

Position hose assembly (9) on the bottom of expansion tank (6). Install a new seal on hose assembly, if necessary. Install bolts (11) in order to secure hose assembly.
Connect sensor harness assembly (7) to the expansion tank.
Connect hose assemblies (4) to the expansion tank.
Repeat the following Steps for the opposite expansion tank: 3, 4 and 5.

Position right cover (2) in the proper mounting location. Install bolts (1) and the washers in order to secure the cover to the expansion tank.
Repeat Step 7 for opposite cover (3) .
Fill the radiators to the correct level with coolant. Refer to Operation and Maintenance
