Personal injury or death can result from an explosion.Applying heat to a tank which has held flammable liquids, even when empty, can result in residual flammable liquid or vapor igniting with explosive force.Do not weld or flame cut on any tank that has held flammable liquid without taking the proper precautions such as filling the tank with either carbon dioxide or water.Please refer to Special Instruction, REHS1841, "General Welding Procedures".
Welding Requirements
Welding quality is critical to the success of the repair. Welds must be smooth and continuous. No undercutting is allowed. No overlap is allowed. Grind the ends of the welds to a smooth radius.Use LB-26 Electrodes (AWS E6013) or equivalent electrodes to weld the fuel tank. Basic welding wire ESAB OK tubrod 15.00 with a 1.2 mm (0.05 inch) diameter can also be used. The basic welding wire must be the equivalent to AWS A5.20 E71T-1 with positive polarity. The welding wire must be protected with CO2 gas.All electrodes must be dried for at least 30 minutes. The electrodes can be dried by heating the electrodes to the temperature of 300 °C (572 °F). Do not weld in windy conditions. Do not weld when temperatures are below 16 °C (61 °F).Penetration characteristics may vary greatly depending on the electrode diameter, shielding gas, welding current, and plate thickness. Geometry of welded joints, surface conditions, and composition of the base metal and electrode also affect the welds. Move the machine to level ground. The ground must support the weight of the machine.

Put the machine in the servicing position. Lowering the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground attains the servicing position. The stick must be in the vertical position when the bucket is flat on the ground. Refer to Illustration 3.
Remove the fuel tank. The weight of the fuel tank is 260 kg (573 lbs). Refer to the applicable Disassembly and Assembly Manual for your machine for the correct removal procedure.Repair Procedure
Do Not Weld an Empty Fuel Tank.Note: An empty fuel tank cannot be cleaned sufficiently in order to ensure that all the flammable vapors have been removed. Vapors remain even after cleaning with steam or washing with a caustic solution. Also, when caustic solutions are heated, caustic solutions can also be explosive.
