Typical Location Code connectionsNote: The location code for your particular machine model will vary from what is shown in the illustration. Refer to the complete Electrical System Schematic for your machine for the correct hard wired location code connections. The ECM contacts that will be involved are: J1-26, J1-27, J1-28 and J1-32.This diagnostic code is activated when the software location code for the ECM does not match the hardware location codes.The probable causes of this diagnostic code is listed:
The software that has been flashed to the ECM is not the correct version.
The part number of the ECM is not correct.
A location code circuit is open or shorted.
The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: Do not change the hard wired location code if you have flashed the incorrect software into the control.Test Step 1. VERIFY HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PART NUMBERS
Verify whether the part number of the software for the ECM is correct and verify that the part number for the ECM that is being flashed is correct.Expected Result:Consult your dealership's Technical Communicator for the correct software and hardware part numbers for your machine. Ensure that the correct software is installed in the ECM.Results:
OK - The correct software is installed for the correct ECM. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - All part numbers are NOT correct. The installed ECM has the wrong part number or incorrect configuration software is installed.Repair: Replace the ECM with a module that has the correct part number or flash the correct configuration software. See Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module - Flash Program".STOPTest Step 2. VERIFY WHETHER THE LOCATION CODE MATCHES THE CAT ET STATUS SCREEN
Check the CAT ET status screen in order to verify the location code. The location codes for each machine covered by this manual are listed below: M313D - 912 M315D - 914 M316D - 915 M318D - 917 M318D MH - 928 M322D - 920 M322D MH - 935Expected Result:The location codes are correct.Results:
OK - The location codes in CAT ET are correct. There is no mismatch.Repair: There is no mismatch. The diagnostic code should not be active at this time. If the diagnostic code is still active, the ECM hay have failed.It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Verify that all possible causes of the diagnostic code have been investigated. Exit this procedure and perform this procedure again.If the diagnostic code remains active or if the diagnostic code is repeatedly activated and no cause can be found, flash the ECM with the latest version of software. Ensure that you have the latest version of software for your specific machine and ECM. Refer to the Testing And Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Flash Program" section of this manual for the correct procedure.If the problem is still present after flashing the latest software to your ECM, contact the dealership's Technical Communicator in order to consult with the Caterpillar Dealer Solutions Network.STOP
