Identifying Metric Fasteners, SEEV0527.Traditionally, Caterpillar products have only used fasteners that are either measured or specified in inches. Although inch (U.S.) fasteners are still used on many Caterpillar products, metric fasteners are now being used in the design of many new Caterpillar products. The 3114 and 3116 Engines, as well as many components manufactured by international suppliers, use metric fasteners.
It is important to recognize the difference between metric and inch fasteners in order to match fastener parts correctly. Do not mix or substitute inch and metric parts even if they seem to match. Always use correctly sized tools for metric and inch fasteners. If fastener parts do not match or incorrect tools are used, either a wrench could slip and cause an injury, or the threads of the fastener could fail and cause equipment damage or malfunction.
The marks on the bolt heads will tell you its type and tensile strength. Radial lines on the bolt head designate inch threads. Numbers on the bolt head indicate metric threads.
