The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem
To meet CSA B149.3-10 Section 9.2.1 requirements, this engine must purge the air system after any abnormal shutdown. This purge is to be implemented directly into the engine control software but is not currently available.Solution
This procedure will act as interim purging instructions, to be used until this purge is available in the engine control software.Follow the procedures specified in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, Starting the Engine section in addition to the procedures outlined below.
Unburned gas in the air inlet and exhaust system may ignite when the engine is started. Personal injury and/or property damage may result. Before starting an engine that may contain unburned gas, purge the unburned gas from the air inlet and exhaust system. Refer to the topic on purging unburned gas in the "Starting the Engine" section.
This procedure must be followed after any abnormal shutdown where residual unburned gas may be present in the air inlet or exhaust system, which includes but is not limited to the following scenarios:
Emergency shutdown/air shutoff engaged
Shutdown due to loss of ECM power
Shutdown due to stall
Shutdown due to loss of diesel fuel supply
Shutdown due to loss of air supply
Shutdown due to ECM forced shutdown
Any shutdown not initiated by the operator
Any shutdown initiated by the operator that closes the air shutoffUpon the FIRST restart attempt after such a shutdown the following purge procedure must be followed. The Engine state must meet the following criteria during this purge:
ECM Main Power: Off or On
ECM Key Power: Off or On
ECM Start/Stop Contacts: Must be in STOP Position
If J1939 Start/Run/Stop request is used, this must be requesting STOP
ECM Emergency Stop Contacts: Must NOT be in Emergency-Stop Position
Air Shutoff gate / butterfly: Must be openManually crank engine at a minimum of 100 rpm for no less than 90 seconds. Some starter manufacturers may require limited continuous cranking, if so these 90 seconds may be broken into segments. The sum of all purge cranking segments must add up to no less than 90 seconds. After cranking for the prescribed time while meeting the above criteria, the engine may be started normally.
