The 173-7715 Lip Seal, which replaced the 9X-4606 Lip Seal, may leak prematurely. The 173-7715 Lip Seal is used to prevent oil from escaping the Torque Converter and Transmission compartments. The seal also prevents the entrance of external contamination. Premature failure of the lip seal can cause loss of oil and damage to the torque converter. Solution:
Replace the 173-7715 Lip Seal with 133-4296 Lip Seal. The 133-4296 Lip Seal has a triple lip sealing mechanism. The 133-4296 Lip Seal has been under evaluation in the field. The results indicate that the 133-4296 Lip Seal has improved early hour reliability compared to the 173-7715 Lip Seal. The field tests have not yet determined the long term durability of the 133-4296 Lip Seal. In cases where the 173-7715 Lip Seal has experienced a failure of premature leakage, the 133-4296 seal can be used as a service part to replace the 173-7715 Lip Seal. In order to assess the performance of the 133-4296 Lip Seal please notify the Service Engineer of any installation and failures of the 133-4296 Lip Seal through September 2001.
