Required Tools
Tool     Part Number     Part Description     Qty
A     1U-6683     Ring Expander     1
B     1P-1857     Retaining Ring Pliers     1
C     1P-0510     Driver Group     1
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
The connecting rod controls the piston height above the cylinder block. The connecting rod and the piston must be assembled and installed in the correct cylinder.
Illustration 1 g01033491
Use Tooling (C) and a suitable press to install piston pin bearing (9) into connecting rod (7) .Note: Ensure that the oil hole in the piston pin bearing is aligned with the oil hole at the top of the connecting rod.Note: If the clearance between piston pin (6) and piston pin bearing (9) exceeds 0.080 mm (0.0031 inch), replace the piston pin or the piston pin bearing with a new part.
Illustration 2 g01033470
Note: Position the piston and the connecting rod so that Mark (Y) on the top of the piston faces the front. Note that Mark (Y) and Number (X) are on the right sight for the purpose of assembly.
Install piston pin (6) into piston (4) and through connecting rod (7) .Note: If the piston pin cannot be installed by hand, raise the temperature of the piston to 45° 5°C (113° 9°F). Do not use a torch to heat the piston.
Use Tooling (B) to install retaining rings (8) that hold piston pin (6) in position.Note: Position the ends of the retaining rings toward the bottom of the piston.
Use Tooling (A) to install the piston rings on piston (4) with the following steps.
Install oil control ring (3) in the groove that is lowest on the piston. The latch pin that is on the oil control ring must be inside the ends of the spring.Note: Ensure that the latch pin that is on the oil control ring is 180 degrees from the oil control ring gap.
Install intermediate compression ring (2) with the tapered face into the second groove on the piston.Note: The stamp must be toward the top of the piston.
Install top compression ring (1) into the top groove on the piston.Note: The stamp must be toward the top of the piston.
Illustration 3 g01033924
Refer to Illustration 3 in order to position the piston ring gaps.
Install connecting rod bearings (10) in connecting rod (7) and in connecting rod cap (11) .
Install connecting rod bolts (5) in connecting rod (7) .
Repeat Steps 2 through 7 in order to assemble the remaining pistons and connecting rods.End By: Install the pistons and connecting rods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Piston and Connecting Rods - Install".
