Reference: Service Magazine, SEPD0257, 29 May 1995, "Causes and Prevention of Guide Block Scuffing"The procedure for checking belt alignment on Tillage Tractors involves changing shims on the front axle. The amount of shims that are used is determined by the temperature difference between the inboard sidewall of the idler wheel and the outboard sidewalls of the idler wheel.A temperature difference between the two sidewalls of the idler of 11 °C (20 °F) is now considered to be the correct temperature difference for correct alignment of the belt. Previously, the belts were considered aligned when the temperature difference between the two sidewalls was 22 °C (40 °F).Note: A quick check of the alignment of the belt can be accomplished by driving the machine straight ahead without steering. The machine should be in sixth gear. Allow the machine to coast to a stop. Do not touch the steering wheel. Visually examine the location of the guide blocks relative to the idler wheel. This can give you a good estimate of the belt alignment. If the guide blocks are centered between the inner idler wheel and the outer idler wheel, alignment is good. If hard contact occurs between the guide blocks and the inner idler, alignment of the belt may be necessary. If hard contact occurs between the guide blocks and the outer idler, alignment of the belt may be necessary. You may want to check the alignment of the belt in this manner before you run the temperature test. This will allow a good estimate of correct alignment of the belt in the future without running the temperature test. For information about the alignment procedure for guide blocks, see the service magazine article that is referenced above.
