Illustration 1. Wheel bearing adjustment components.1. Place the wheel assembly and bearing in position on the spindle housing. Put oil on the wheel bearings.2. Install hub and ring gear.
Illustration 2. Bolt tightening sequence.3. Install the retainer without shims. Install ten of the 20 bolts used to hold the retainer in place on the spindle, as shown in Illustration 2.4. Tighten the ten bolts, in the sequence shown in Illustration 2, to 70 N m (50 lb ft), while rotating the wheel to make sure the bearings are correctly seated.5. Loosen the ten bolts so there is no torque on them.6. While slowly turning the wheel, tighten the ten bolts evenly, in the sequence shown in Illustration 2, to a torque of 40 N m (30 lb ft). It is important to rotate the wheel while the bolts are being tightened. Check the torque on each bolt several times to be sure the bolts are tightened evenly and the bearings are seated correctly.7. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance from the outside of the retainer to the spindle housing. Make this measurement several times through the small holes in the retainer. Use these measurements to determine the average distance from the outside of the retainer to the spindle housing. Record this average.8. Remove the retainer.9. Use an outside micrometer to measure the thickness of the retainer at several of the small holes. Use these measurements to determine the average thickness of the retainer. Record this average.10. Subtract the average thickness of the retainer (from Step 9) from the average distance from the outside of the retainer to the spindle housing (from Step 7). The result is the gap between the end of the spindle housing and the retainer. This is the correct thickness of shims needed.11. Install the retainer and shims (from Step 10) with 20 bolts. While slowly turning the wheel, tighten the 20 bolts evenly, in a sequence similar to the one shown in Illustration 2, to a torque of 270 25 N m (200 20 lb ft).12. To check the wheel bearing adjustment, repeat Step 7 to determine the average distance from the outside of the retainer to the spindle housing. Record this average. Compare this measurement to the measurement from Step 7. If the measurements differ by more than 0.08 mm (.003"), remove the retainer and add or subtract shims equal to the difference between the two measurements. If shims are added or removed in Step 12, repeat Steps 8 through 12.
