Connections for the Communication Adapter II and the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat-ET) service tool
The components needed in order to use the Communication Adapter II and the Cat-ET service tool in order to determine diagnostic codes are listed below:

(9) Current version of the Cat-ET service tool software and an IBM compatible personal computer Reference: See Special Publication, NEHS0758, "Communications Adapter II User Manual Contains Software".Note: The Cat-ET service tool is a software program that can be used on an IBM compatible personal computer. In order to use the Cat-ET service tool, order the following materials: Special Publication, JERD2124, "ET Single Use Program License", Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet", 7X-1425 Data Link Cable and the Data Subscription and Special Publication, JERD2142, "Data Subscription". The Special Publication, JEHP1026, "Information and Requirements Sheet" lists the required hardware and the features of the Cat-ET.The Cat-ET service tool is not required in order to determine the diagnostic codes. The Cat-ET service tool is also not required in order to clear the diagnostic codes. However, the process of determining the diagnostic codes is easier and faster by using Cat-ET. The Cat-ET service tool can also display information on the history of a diagnostic code and the parameter status of diagnostic codes. These features allow the Cat-ET service tool to be a useful tool for troubleshooting.The Cat-ET service tool is used to communicate to the electronic control module over the data link by connecting to the machine diagnostic connector. (4) 207-6845 Adapter Cable As Note: Items (2), (3), and (4) are part of the 171-4400 Communication Adapter II Gp.Use the following procedure to connect Cat ET and the Communication Adapter II.
Turn the keyswitch to the OFF/RESET position. If the key start switch is not placed in the OFF/RESET position, the engine may start.
Connect cable (2) between the "COMPUTER" end of communication adapter (3) and the RS232 serial port of PC (1).

The service tool connector is located on the rear wall of the operator station.

The service tool connector is also located on the front bumper of the truck on the inside of the remote switch panel.
(1) Remote switch panel
(2) The LED panel indicates an active diagnostic code or an active event code (active during a level 2 or higher event code or diagnostic code).
Connect cable (4) between the "DATA LINK" end of communication adapter (3) and the service tool connector.
Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. If the Cat ET service tool and the communication adapter do not communicate with the Engine Control Module (ECM), proceed to the next Test Step. The Caterpillar Electronic Technician Does not Communicate
