Turn the engine start switch to the ON position. The alert indicator for brake oil pressure should come on if the braking system is not at normal operating pressure. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System" for the location of the alert indicators.
Start the engine. Run the engine at half speed for 2 minutes in order to increase the accumulator pressure. The alert indicator for brake oil pressure should go off.
Stop the engine. Apply the service brake pedal and release the service brake pedal. The rate for this process is 1 second on and 1 second off. Do this process until the alert indicator for brake oil pressure comes on. This process will decrease the accumulator pressure. A minimum of five applications of the service brake pedal are required with new discs. The number of applications could be as low as three when the lining material on the brake discs is at replacement thickness.
If the alert indicator comes on after less than three applications of the brake, measure the accumulator precharge pressure. An authorized Cat dealer can measure the nitrogen gas pressure in the accumulator. Use only dry nitrogen gas for recharging. Reference: Refer to Systems Operation, KENR6497, "834K/836K Testing and Adjusting", "Brake Accumulator - Test and Charge" for the correct procedure.
