Information:
Ensure that the filter housing end cap is thoroughly cleaned and free of all debris prior to reinstallation. Caterpillar recommends using a precleaned end cap replacement for best cleanliness and efficiency of filter change.Best Practices For Contamination Control Before Cylinder Head Removal For Certain C175 Engines
Keep all parts free from contaminants. Contaminants can cause rapid wear and shorten component service life.

(2) Example of an improperly cleaned block deck
(3) Oil supply dowel
The cleaning process is intended to eliminate the risk of head face debris falling into oil supply dowel (3) during service. Refer to Illustration 15 for examples of what block decks should look like after the cleaning process.

Clean the top of the engine with a high-pressure washer using hot water with a mixture of degreaser and clear water rinse prior to cylinder head removal.Note: The cylinder head to block joints can have more debris built up around the integral seals. The integral seal design allows dirt buildup that will require more effort to remove. Be careful not to damage or cut the integral seal joints with high-pressure water.

Areas around the cylinder head that require extra cleaning.
(4) Exhaust manifold openings
After the top of the engine has been pressure washed, remove the exhaust manifold to gain access to the top of the cylinder head.
Properly cover exhaust manifold openings (4) to avoid contamination during the cleaning process.
Extra scraping, vacuuming, and spraying of solvents will be required to remove the rest of the debris around the cylinder head. Refer to Illustration 17.

After the dowel is removed, use a cap so dirt and debris do not get into the oil system.

When the cylinder head is removed, immediately install plug cap (5) in the locations shown in Illustration 19. The plug cap will prevent debris from entering the oil gallery for the cylinder head or block.Note: Plug caps must be removed before installation of the cylinder heads back onto the engine.
Thoroughly clean (vacuum) the rest of the top deck of the block, ensuring the plug cap stays in place during this entire operation.
