Gouge out the welds around the old lug assembly (hitch). Gouge the two 12 mm (0.5 inch) curved bevel welds that are located on the front and rear of the curved surface of the old lug assembly (hitch) (C). Then remove the 10 mm (0.4 inch) fillet welds that are located on the ends of the old lug assembly (hitch) (B). Remove only enough weld in order to loosen the old lug assembly (hitch) from the center frame.
Remove the old lug assembly (hitch).
Clean the gouged areas by grinding.

Inspect the new lug assembly (hitch). Ensure that button (D) is welded on the bottom of the new lug assembly (hitch). Verify that the weld completely seals the plug. A pressure test is not required. This button caps a machined passageway and capping this passageway will cause the grease to flow up to the spherical bearing. This passageway will be completed in Steps 22 through Step 24.

Installation of the new lug assembly (hitch)
Locate the new lug assembly (hitch) in the assembly.
Reinstall the locators onto the proper blocks. Reinstall the locators by using two bolts (7) and two washers (8). Install the new lug assembly (hitch) without using (3) shims. The new lug assembly (hitch) must be raised and held against locators (1). The new lug assembly (hitch) must also contact setscrews for locators (10) and locator (6). The new lug assembly (hitch) (E) has a chamfer that is located above the bore. Mount the lug assembly (hitch) with the chamfer toward the rear of the hitch.
Verify that there is contact between the lug assembly (hitch) and all of the stops.
Use a dial indicator on the end of the boring bar to sweep the rough bore. This will ensure that the lug assembly (hitch) is in the proper location.
Tack weld the lug assembly (hitch) all around.

Weld in the new lug assembly (hitch) (B) Three weld passes are required. Weld in two places (C) Three weld passes are required. Weld the front and the rear of the lug assembly (hitch).
Remove locators again by removing the bolts (7) and the washers (8) .
Weld each end (B) of the lug assembly (hitch) by using a 10 mm (0.4 inch) fillet weld. Weld each end with three complete passes. Reference Illustration 15
Weld each side (C) of the lug assembly (hitch) by using a 12 mm (0.5 inch) grooved bevel weld. Weld each side with three complete passes. Start each weld pass in the center and weld toward each end. Alternate welding the front side and the rear side with each pass. Remove the slag after each pass. It is important to stagger the starting point of each weld. This will allow proper weld penetration at the starting points. Reference Illustration 15
