Certain machines may develop cracks in the lift arms. Generally, the machines that are cracking have high hours. The affected machines are usually involved in heavy loading applications. The crack usually begins at the midpoint along the underside of the lift arm. The crack extends upward along the outside of the lift arm.Solution
A fabricated steel plate should be welded at the joint in order to strengthen the lift arm. The steel plate will help prevent these cracks from forming. Perform the following steps in order to help prevent the cracks. This procedure is not valid if a crack already exists.

Fabricate a steel plate that is 8 mm (0.32 inch) thick. Refer to Illustration 1 and Illustration 2 for more information.
Position the steel plate inside the channel on the underside of the lift arm. Refer to Illustration 2.
Use a 6 mm (0.24 inch) fillet weld with a 1.5 mm (0.06 inch) penetration along the back side of the plate. An 8 mm (0.32 inch) groove weld should be used to weld the remaining three sides.
