1. Lubrication
A. Remove the valve mechanism covers.
B. Check the lubrication in the valve compartment. Ensure that there is adequate engine oil flow in the valve compartment. The passages for the engine oil must be clean.     Lubrication    
Result: The oil passages are not blocked and the engine has proper lubrication.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The oil passages are blocked or the engine does not have proper lubrication.
Repair: Make the necessary repairs.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
   
2. Valve Lash
A. Adjust the engine valve lash to the correct setting.
    Valve Lash    
Result: The valve lash setting is correct.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The valve lash setting is incorrect.
Repair: Set the valve lash to the correct setting and refer to the engines Systems Operation and Testing and Adjusting manual.
   
3. Valve Train Components
A. Check for damage to valve train components. Remove the valve cover from the suspect cylinders. Check the following items for damage:
- Camshaft
- Valve Lifters
- Rocker Arms
- Pushrods
- Valve Stems
- Rocker Shafts
B. Check the components for the following conditions: abnormal wear, excessive wear, straightness, and cleanliness. Replace parts if necessary.
Note: If you replace the camshaft, you also need to replace the valve lifters.
C. Adjust the engine valve lash. Refer to the engines Systems Operation and Testing and Adjusting manual.
    Valve Train    
Result: The valve train components are not damaged.
STOP
Result: The valve train components are damaged.
Repair: Make the necessary repairs.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
