Components of the rear axle

(5) Parking brake Power from the transmission output shaft is transferred to the rear axle by the drive shaft and universal joints. The power enters the rear axle through the input flange. The input flange is attached to the parking brake and the pinion gear. Power is transferred from the pinion gear to the differential ring gear. Power is transferred through the differential by the pinion, the pinions, and the side gears. The side gears are splined to the axle shafts. Refer to Systems Operation, "Differential" for more information about the differential.The axle also contains the differential lock. Refer to Systems Operation, "Differential Lock".Power is transferred through the differential to the axle shafts. The power passes through service brakes.The power enters the final drives. (10) Carrier The rear axle contains the service brakes. The brake plates (8) are pinned to the brake housing. The friction discs (9) are splined to the carrier (10). The carrier (10) is splined to the axle shaft (6). When the brakes are applied, the brake pistons (7) push the brake plates (8) against the friction discs (9). This causes friction. The friction causes the wheels to turn at a slower rate or stop. The brake piston (7) is held in place by the pins. When the brake pedal is released, the springs on the pins force the brake piston (7) away from the brake plates (8). This action releases the brakes on the axle.Final Drives

(15) Planetary gears The power is transferred through the axle shaft (6) to the final drive. The final drive causes the last speed reduction and the last torque increase in the drive train. The final drive consists of the following components: the sun gear (13), the carrier (1), the planetary gears (15), and the ring gear (14). The sun gear (13) is joined to the axle shaft (6). The ring gear (14) is splined to the housing (12). Three planetary gears (15) are mounted in the carrier (1). The carrier (1) is bolted to the flange (11). The flange (11) rotates on the housing (12) with two opposing tapered roller bearings.The power is transferred through the sun gear (13) to the planetary gears (15). The planetary gears (15) revolve around the inside of the ring gear (14). The movement of the planetary gears (15) around the ring gear (14) causes the carrier (1) and flange (11) to rotate. Power is transferred from the flange (11) to the wheel.
