When pinion bearings (1) and (6) are installed, find the thickness of shims (3) needed for bearing preload as follows:1. Put the cups of bearings (1) and (6) into bearing housing (5).2. Put bearing (9), cam (10) and cone of bearing (1) on the pinion shaft (8). Make sure that the large radius on the inside diameter of the cone of bearing (1) goes on the pinion shaft first.3. Put the pinion shaft in bearing housing (5).4. Install bearing spacer (2) on pinion shaft (8) in the flange end of bearing housing (5).5. Put a piece of 5B1161 Lead Wire on the end of spacer (2).6. Put the cone of bearing (6) on the pinion shaft.7. Install the drive gear or a sleeve the same size as the gear, washer (11) and nut (12).8. With the pinion shaft held in a vise, put a piece of string 12 to 18 in. (305 to 457 mm) long on the flange of bearing housing (5).9. Put the extra string around the outside diameter of the bearing housing. 10. Fasten the other end of the string to a spring scale.11. Tighten nut (12) until a value of 6.5 to 10 lb. (29 to 45 N) on the spring scale is needed for constant rotation of the bearing housing around the pinion shaft.12. Remove nut (12), washer (11), drive gear or sleeve if used and the cone of bearing (6).13. Carefully remove the lead wire.14. Measure the wire to find the correct thickness needed for shims (3).15. Install shims (3), cone of bearing (6), drive gear, washer (11) and nut (12).16. Tighten nut (12) to a torque of 100 to 120 lb. ft. (135 to 160 N m).17. Check the preload again using the spring scale.18. Install the cotter pin.
