preparatory step: a) remove transmission 1. Remove transfer gear cover. 2. Remove retaining bolt (1), retainer (2), and yoke (3).3. Remove the mounting bolts from the output shaft carrier and remove carrier assembly. 4. Remove bolt (4) and retainer (5) from the output shaft gear. 5. Remove output shaft (6) and bearing (7). Remove output gear (8) from housing. 6. Remove the output shaft bearing by using tool setup (A). 7. Remove bearing race (9) from the transmission case. 8. Remove retaining bolts (11), locks (10), shims and O-ring seal from output shaft carrier (12).9. Remove bearing and bearing cup only if bearings are to be replaced. 10. Remove the output shaft carrier seal. 11. Remove retaining bolts (13) and locks (14) from the pinion cage. 12. Use forcing screws to remove cage (16) and shims (15) from housing. 13. Remove pinion gear assembly (17) from the cage. 14. Using tool setup (B), remove bearings from the pinion. 15. Remove the bolts and locks from the cage and remove cage.16. Remove the bearing cup from the cage.Assemble Transfer Gear
1. Install the cage, bolts and locks in the transmission case. 2. Install the bearing cup in the cage, using tool setup (A). 3. Heat bearings to 275°F (135°C) and install bearings on pinion gear.4. Install pinion gear and bearings in cage. 5. Install output gear shaft in cage. Install shaft assembly in transmission housing. Tighten retaining bolts. 6. Install bearing race in pinion retainer using tool setup (A). 7. Install pinion retainer on transmission housing with no shims. Tighten four retaining bolts (1) to 5 lb. ft. (0,7 mkg). 8. Check gear backlash using tool setup (B). 9. Add or remove shims (2) from output gear shaft and pinion inner cage assemblies as required to establish .006-.013 in. (0,15-0,33 mm) backlash while keeping gear teeth aligned.10. Remove four retaining bolts (1), install shims on retainer and install cage and bolts. Tighten bolts to 5 lb. ft. (0,7 mkg).11. Check pinion end play using tool setup (B).12. Adjust shims on bearing retainer until .002-.008 in. (0,05-0,20 mm) end play occurs. 13. Install seal and retainer on output gear shaft and cage assembly.14. Install yoke. Tighten bolts to 85 5 lb. ft. (11,7 0,7 mkg). 15. Install pinion retainer bolts and locks.16.
