Information:

Assembly And Adjustment Of Swing Drive Output Shaft
This information is for the assembly and adjustment of components on the output shaft only. For other parts of the swing drive, see the Service Manual. Parts reference numbers in this procedure are shown in Illustration 1 that follows. For illustrations of tools that have letter references, see the Service Manual.
Illustration 1. Item numbers are shown in the steps of the procedure.1. Put the swing drive case (8) in position so the lower end of the cage (9) is up. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup (11) and install it in the cage (9).
After a failure, check the bearing bore in the cage (9) to see that the bore is still round, and check the pinion shaft (20) to be sure it is still straight. The bore in the cage must be 9.2475 .0015" (234.887 .038 mm). If not, install a new cage. Hold the pinion shaft between machine centers and check the shaft with a dial indicator against the lower bearing diameter. The total indicator reading at this location must not be more than .003" (0.08 mm). If it is, install a new shaft.
2. After the cup (11) is at ambient (atmospheric) temperature again, make sure it is tight against the shoulder in the cage.3. Turn the case over. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup (6). Install the cup in the case.4. After the cup (6) is at ambient (atmospheric) temperature again, make sure it is tight against the shoulder in the case.5. Put the pinion shaft (20) against tool (B) with the pinion end of the shaft up. Use tools (C) to hold the shaft in position.6. Put anti-seize compound on the surfaces for the bearing cone and the pinion gear splines.7. Heat the bearing cone (10) in oil to a maximum temperature of 275°F (135°C). Put the bearing cone in position on the shaft (20).
Install bearing cone on the shaft so the distance from the end of the shaft to the cone is less than six inches (152 mm). The bearing cone will be pushed into the correct position when the pinion (14) is installed.
8. Install Duo-Cone seal (18) in each retainer (13 & 19) with tool (A). Install the O-ring seal on each retainer.
The rubber seals and all surfaces that make contact with the seals must be clean and dry. After installation of seals, put oil on the contact surfaces of the metal seals.
9. Install retainer (19) on the pinion shaft.10. Install retainer assembly (13) on the pinion shaft until the spacer in the retainer assembly makes contact with the bearing cone (10).11. Fasten a hoist to pinion (14) and install it on the shaft (20). Install pinion with the spline counterbore (seal groove) toward end of shaft. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. Location of measurements and correct position of gear and pinion.12. Put retainer (15) in position on the pinion (14) and install the bolts (16) that hold it to the pinion shaft.
