Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below. Problem
Certain Track-Type Tractors, Excavators, and Articulated Trucks may experience ice accumulation in the intake manifold and NOx Reduction System (NRS) lines. The ice accumulation may occur when idling for more than 3 hours with ambient temperatures lower than −20° C (−4° F).If enough ice accumulates, the air flow to the engine is choked. The exhaust can be fuel rich which can be recirculated to the intake through the NOx Reduction System (NRS). The engine could more rapidly accumulate soot in the DPF, potentially plugging the inlet face of the DPF. Additionally, the engine may run at engine speeds below low idle, which can be detrimental to the durability of the engine. If ice accumulation is suspected, review VisionLink or the product status report. VisionLink and the product status report are used for investigating the following fault code trends. If the machine is operating in cold ambient temperatures and the intake manifold has accumulated ice, one or both of the following diagnostic fault code events may be present.
E1045 (2) Low Intake Manifold Pressure
1785-21 Intake Manifold Pressure Sensor: Data Drifted LowIf the machine has experienced rapid soot accumulation, any of the following diagnostic fault code events may be present:
E995 (2) or (3) High DPF #1 Soot Loading
E992 (3) DPF Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to Temporary System Lockout
E991 (3) DPF Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to Temporary System LockoutSolution
Remove the intake manifold, mixer elbow, and NOx Reduction System (NRS) lines to check for the accumulation of ice. If ice is present, clean out the ice.Inspect the inlet to the DPF for face plugging. If ice accumulation in the intake manifold has occurred, do not start the engine until the inlet to the DPF is inspected. Failure to do so can damage the DPF. The inlet to the DPF will have soot, but each cell will be open, to allow exhaust to flow through. If face plugging of the inlet to the DPF has occurred, do not start the engine, and replace the DPF.In addition to the following the guidelines for idling machines listed in Technical Information Bulletin, TIBU6500, "Extended Idling in Cold Ambient Temperatures Can Cause Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Regeneration Issues on Products Equipped with the Caterpillar Regeneration System (CRS)", installing Prod7 engine software onto the machine is recommended. Updates to the engine software include strategies to prevent ice accumulation, as well as other improvements. Ice is prevented from accumulating during extended idling by increasing engine speed until a safe ATAAC outlet temperature is reached. If the engine reaches high idle engine speed and cannot maintain a safe ATAAC outlet temperature, the machine will shut down to prevent damage from occurring.Use the following table to determine the correct Prod7 engine software.
