Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot the following engine event.

1237-31
Engine Shutdown Overridden Any of the engine shutdown switches are activated while the engine shutdown override switch is active.(1)
Note: Activation of the shutdown override switch will not disable an engine shutdown that is initiated by an engine overspeed condition. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will suspend any request to shut down the engine from the shutdown switches.
(1) This code can be activated by a request from the control panel over the CAN data link to perform the associated task.Probable Causes

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Determine if the diagnostic trouble code that directed to this procedure is present.
D. Look for active diagnostic codes that are associated with the system for the event code that directed to this procedure.
1237-31
Result: An associated code is present.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A 1237-31 is active.
Proceed to the next step.
Result: No active codes
STOP
2. Activated Shut Down Switch
A. Talk to the operator and determine the reason for the emergency stop shutdown.
Switch
Result: The emergency stop shutdown was activated.
Reset the shutdown switch. Confirm that the condition for the emergency stop shutdown has been resolved.
Cycle the keyswitch in order to reset the control system.
Result: The emergency stop shutdown was not activated.
Proceed to the next step
3. Inspect the Circuit for the Shutdown Switch
A. Inspect the stop switches for evidence of damage that has been caused by vibration, moisture, or corrosion. Check the circuit for the shutdown switch. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Shutdown - Test".
Circuit
Result: The circuit is damaged for the shutdown switch.
Repair: Diagnose the problem and then repair the problem.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
