Gear Motor (Hydraulic Fan) (1) Fan motor inlet. (2) Fan motor outlet. (3) Fan motor case drain. The fan motor is located on the outside of the radiator. The fan motor rotates in the counterclockwise direction.

Gear MotorThe fan motor is an external gear hydraulic motor. Oil enters the fan motor at high pressure. Oil at high pressure will follow the path of least resistance. As the gears rotate, oil fills the teeth of the gears and the oil follows a path around the outside of the gears because the outlet side of the pump is at low pressure. The oil exits the other side of the motor at low pressure.The driven gear is attached to a shaft. The fan assembly is attached to the shaft. When the gears in the pump rotate, the fan will rotate at the same speed.Oil that leaks past the gears and past the end plates of the pump will flow through the case drain for the fan motor (3).
