STEP 1. Check Generator Power in all Notches Test Procedure:Check generator power in each notch and note which notch settings result in incorrect power levels. Verify that voltage or current limits are not causing loss of power. Expected Results:The generator power is wrong in all notches or only in the higher notches. STEP 2. Check for engine lugging. Test Procedure:Switch control lever into highest notch position. Observe engine speed. Remove generator load using the generator unload switch. Observe engine speed. Expected Results:To determine whether engine is capable of accepting generator load with available rack travel. STEP 3. Check Engine Fuel Setting Test Procedure:Check engine fuel setting according to engine service manual. Expected Results:Fuel setting is set correctly. STEP 4. Manual Linkage Check Test Procedure:Disconnect fuel linkage from actuator lever. Check fuel linkage manually for high effort or binding. Expected Results:Linkage moves with low effort with no binding through full travel. Step 5. Manual Actuator Lever Check Test Procedure:Manually check lever movement for high effort and full travel. Also check, with linkage held against stop screw, actuator lever has some extra travel beyond the linkage stop. Expected Results:Correct range of travel available with smooth movement through full range. Step 6. Actuator Oil Pressure Output Check Test Procedure:Remove the test pressure plug from actuator and install 6V2044 Test Pressure Gauge. Now crank the engine and read pressure gauge. For the correct pressure range, see ACTUATOR SPECIFICATIONS in Service Procedure B. Expected Results:Correct oil pressure with constant output. Step 7. Check Actuator Oil Supply Circuit and Mechanical Drive Test Procedure:a. Correct oil supplyb. Plugged drain.c. Oil too thin.d. Drive has rotation.e. Correct direction of rotation.f. Damage to Coupling or Splines.Engine compartment oil sump must be full, and suction line must be open and without air leaks (caused by faulty gaskets or loose fittings). Actuator oil drain must drain freely. Expected Results:To find problem with the actuator drive or oil circuit. Step 8. Resistance Check of Actuator and Leads Test Procedure:Disconnect Connector J2 from the locomotive control box. Measure the resistance between pins 1 and 2 of the wiring harness side of connector J2. Expected Results:Measured resistance should be between 30 and 40 ohms. Step 9. Actuator Coil Resistance Check Test Procedure:Disconnect wiring connector from actuator. Put a jumper across pins C and D of connector. Measure the actuator coil resistance across connector pins A and B. (See Service Procedure B Fig. 2.) If sure-seal connector is not used and wire connection is crimped, the wires will have to be cut. Cut the wire at each side of the crimp connection to remove a potential problem. Expected Results:Measured resistance to be between 30 to 40 ohms. Step 10. Actuator Lead Resistance Check Test Procedure:Measure resistance of each lead between: Pin A and harness connector J2 pin 1. Pin B and harness connector J2 pin 2. Expected Results:Measured resistance of each lead is less than 1 ohm. Step 11. Rack Sensor Calibration Check Test Procedure:Check rack sensor calibration according to Service Procedure
