Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Push Rods - Remove" for the engine that is being serviced. Note: Mark the correct location of each valve lifter on the valve lifter. The valve lifters must be installed in the original locations.

Use Tooling (A) in order to remove valve lifters (1), as shown.
Check the diameter of the valve lifters. The maximum permissible clearance between the valve lifter and the bore for the valve lifter is 0.30 mm (0.012 inch).
