Component Code(s) 7451SUBJECT: A DEFECTIVE ROTARY DIAL SWITCH IN THE MONITOR FOR THE
SOLID STATE MAGNET CONTROLLER MAY PREVENT A CLEAN MATERIAL
DROP FOR CERTAIN MATERIAL HANDLERS
PROBLEM:
Reports from the field indicate that Material Handlers configured with a solid state magnet controller may intermittently experience difficulties obtaining a clean drop of material from the magnet. The problem will often occur after a series of material drops is repeated.
SOLUTION:
The rotary dial switch for the drop timer selects the proper level of drop current in order to clean the magnet. The switch settings allow the operator to change the drop current to adjust for different material and magnet sizes. The switch is a non-serviceable component in the 166-4703 Monitor.
If material intermittently remains attached to the magnet after a series of material drops; the switch in the monitor may be defective. Replace the monitor with a new 166-4703 Monitor if the switch is defective. The location of the switch on the monitor is shown in Illustration 1.
The correct operation of the switch can be verified by inspecting the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) indicator lights. A view of the PLC is shown in Illustration 2.

Before making any adjustments to the generator
the engine must be shut off and the main discon-
nect switch on the controller must be in the off po-
sition. Personal injury can occur.
Close all controller panel doors before the gener-
ator is started. Personal injury can occur.
Never handle the leads to the magnet unless the
generator is stopped and the main disconnect
switch on the controller is in the off position.
Personal injury can occur.
Switch the engine to the OFF position. Make sure that the generator is not rotating before proceeding.
Confirm that input indicator lights 10, 11, and 12 are functioning correctly by comparing the indicator lights to the binary position chart as shown in Illustration 3. Rotate the switch from position 1 through position 8. The indicator lights must match the chart.
Example for switch position 4: Indicator light 12 should be the only light activated. The switch is defective if either indicator light 10 or 11 is activated or glows dimly.
Check harness connectors, wires, and screw connections at the PLC before changing the monitor to replace a defective switch.
