1. Identify and disconnect four hoses (1) from the hand metering unit (HMU). 2. Remove two bolts (2) and tilt complete dash panel forward, as illustrated. 3. Support the (HMU) and remove four bolts (3), then lower the (HMU) to disengage the steering shaft spline and remove the (HMU). Install in the reverse order.Disassemble And Assemble Hand Metering Unit
Start By:a. remove hand metering unit 1. Remove plug (1) and relief valve (2) from hand metering unit.
HMU Relief Valve Mark stacked section of hand metering unit for proper assembly stack alignment. At the time of assembly, tighten bolts (3) and bolt (15) to a torque of 25 to 35 N m (19 to 26 lb.ft.).2. Remove six bolts (3) bolt (15) with roll pin and check ball (16). Check ball (16) and bolt (15) must be assembled in the same bore with bushing (17).3. Remove end cap (4), gerotor body (5) with seals, rotor (11) and spacer (12). Remove drive (14), note position of drive (14) to drive pin (9). Remove spacer plate (6) with seal. 4. Remove spool (8) and sleeve (7) as an assembly from the body of the hand metering unit. Remove thrust bearing (13) from body.
Springs (10) are under compression. To prevent personal injury, be sure to position springs (10) in a direction away from persons.
5. Remove drive pin (9) and spool (8) from sleeve (7), disengaging sleeve (7) from springs (10). Remove springs (10) from spool (8). For proper assembly timing of the (HMU) and all special torques, refer to the Specifications module, Form KENR1297, and the Systems Operation Testing And Adjusting module, Form KENR1298.
