Family Of EnginesReference: Engine News; December 1990; Page 9; "Installation Of Kiene® Valves" for 3600 Family Of Engines.Removing the Kiene valve or plug from the cylinder head may damage the threads in the cylinder head. If the threads are damaged and a plug or valve can not be installed, the cylinder head can be repaired by using the following the procedure.
1. Apply 138 kPa (20 psi) of air pressure into the cylinder through the compression relief valve port or the opening for the unit injector. This will force any metal chips away from the cylinder while the repair is being made.2. Drill out the damaged threads with a 22.75 mm (.896 in) diameter drill to a maximum depth of 24.0 mm (.94 in).3. Thread the hole to a depth of 17.0 mm (.67 in) with a 3/4-14 NPTF tap.4. Apply 5P3931 Thread (high temperature anti-seize) Compound to the threads of a 8B2664 Reducing Bushing. Install the bushing in the cylinder head.5. Install the 7E1699 Manual Valve Group (not serviced as a group) in the cylinder. See the Reference Article for the correct installation of the Kiene valve.
