Propel Motor (2) Differential Lock CylinderThe transmission shift assembly is operated by differential lock cylinder (2). Differential lock cylinder (2) is mounted to the carrier. Differential lock cylinder (2) is engaged by depressing foot switch (1). Foot switch (1) is located at the base of the operator's console. Differential lock cylinder (2) is disengaged by releasing foot switch (1). Foot switch (1) must remain depressed in order to sustain the engagement of differential lock cylinder (2).

Differential Lock Assembly (3) Transmission Shift Assembly (4) Collar (5) Axle Shaft (6) Differential CaseWhen transmission shift assembly (3) is activated, collar (4) moves on the splines of axle shaft (5) toward differential case (6). When the splines on collar (4) are engaged with the splines on differential case (6), the axle shafts are locked to the differential assembly.When the differential lock is in the ENGAGED position, both wheels turn at the same rate in order to minimize the spinning of the wheels. To avoid scuffing the tires, differential lock cylinder (2) should be engaged only when the machine is operating at a low speed. A light on the Caterpillar Monitoring System illuminates when differential lock cylinder (2) is engaged. Differential lock cylinder (2) does not engage immediately after switch (1) is pressed. Differential lock cylinder (2) only engages when loading on the splines is allowed. The loading on the spline also affects the disengagement.Final Drive
