Truck Engines:
C9 (S/N: MTB1-UP; 9DG1-UP)
There have been reports of intake valves that are sticking in very cold climates. The engines that are affected are listed above.Avoid excess idling of the engine. If the vehicle is parked for more than five minutes, stop the engine. An engine can burn 2.8 L (0.74 US gal) to 5.7 L (1.51 US gal) of fuel per hour while the engine is idling. Excessive idling can cause carbon buildup. This is harmful to the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Operation" for the proper guidelines of engine operation.Idle speed is adjustable on Caterpillar electronic engines. The engines are preset to a rpm between 700 and 750 rpm. If extended idle time is required, control the engine rpm to 1000 rpm or above 1000 rpm. Ensure that the coolant temperature exceeds 82 °C (180 °F). Idle mode can be programmed through the Engine Control Module (ECM). The idle mode requires an ON and OFF switch that is mounted on the dash of the machine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Idle Mode" for setting the idle mode of the engine.
