1. Machine must be level, bowl lowered, and engine stopped and cool. 2. Loosen filler cap slowly to release pressure and remove cap. 3. Open radiator drain valve and allow coolant to drain. 4. Remove coolant drain plugs from engine oil cooler. Allow coolant to drain.5. Remove coolant drain plug from retarder oil cooler, if equipped. Allow coolant to drain.6. Close drain valve and install all drain plugs.7. Mix antifreeze to provide protection to the lowest expected ambient temperature. Do not fill cooling system completely. Allow for addition of inhibitor.8. To help avoid air locks, add coolant slowly at 5 U.S. gallons (19 litres) per minute or less. See REFILL CAPACITIES.9. Add 5 qts. (4.75 litres) of Caterpillar Cooling System Inhibitor, or equivalent, to provide a 3% concentration of inhibitor in the cooling system.10. Bring coolant level to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of bottom of fill pipe.11. Start and operate engine with filler cap off. Add coolant, if necessary, after level stabilizes.12. Replace cap seal if damaged. Install cap.(40)Differentials And Final Drives
Hot oil or components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Machine must be level, bowl lowered, parking brake applied, engine stopped and differential and final drive lubricant warm.
1. Remove differential drain plug and allow lubricant to drain. 2. Position tractor wheels with drain plugs at bottom. Remove plugs and allow lubricant to drain.3. Clean and install all drain plugs. 4. Fill differential and final drives with lubricant. See REFILL CAPACITIES. 5. To speed filling, add lubricant at final drives. Position wheels with drain plugs at bottom. Remove fill plug and add lubricant to each final drive to bottom of filler opening. 6. Measure lubricant level after a few hours of operation. Maintain level between ADD and FULL marks on dipstick.(41)Steering Gear Sector Housing
1. Loosen 2 clamps and remove boot at bottom of steering column. 2. Remove filler plug on steering gear sector housing. 3. Maintain oil level to bottom of filler opening.4. Clean and install filler plug.5. Install boot and tighten clamps.(42)Steering Column Bearings
Lubricate 1 fitting for upper bearing. Remove plug. Lubricate lower bearing with 2 or 3 squirts of oil.(43)Scraper Wheel Bearings - Serial Numbers 61E1 to 61E1469 (with grease lubricated wheel bearings)
1. Scraper wheels must be removed and bearings hand packed.2. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for wheel removal and disassembly instructions.3. Remove inner and outer bearing cones from each wheel. 4. Remove any old grease from bearing cavity, and clean cavity and the 2 bearing cups thoroughly. Inspect bearing cups for damage.5. Clean old grease from the bearing cones with clean non-flammable solvent. Replace both cup and cone as a set if either is not reusable. A small amount of abrasive wear or pitting does not always render a bearing unusable. Replace bearing if wear, that is present, could result in excessive end play. Replace if badly pitted or bruised, or if grooves appear in rollers and races. A bearing that is corroded or stained may be
