Assemble the 171-1072 Gear, bearings (1) and cage (2) as shown in illustration 1. DO NOT install shims (4). Use a suitable driver to ensure that the bearing cups and cones are fully seated. Use the the information in the reference manual for the heating and cooling of the bearing parts.
Install two new bolts (3) with washers.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22.5 .5 N m (16.5 .4 lb ft). Rotate the gear for three revolutions.
Tighten the bolts to a torque of 22.5 .5 N m (16.5 .4 lb ft). Rotate the gear for three revolutions.
Repeat this process until the bolts do not move on subsequent attempts.Note: Rotation of the transfer gear is critical in order to get proper seating of all components.
Remove the bolts and the washers. Reinstall the bolts without the washers.
Tighten the bolts in small increments in order to ensure that the cage is pulled down evenly. Tighten in this way to a torque of 6 1 N m (4.5 0.7 lb ft).
Rotate the pinion for three revolutions.
Tighten the bolts in small increments to a torque of 11.3 .5 N m (8.3 0.4 lb ft).
Repeat step 9 until the bolts do not rotate on subsequent attempts.
By using a depth micrometer or a dial indicator, measure the distance from the face of the cage to the carrier (A) through the two holes in the cage. Record the average measurement.
Measure the cage flange thickness at each hole. Subtract the average transfer cage flange thickness from the average measurement recorded from step 11. This gives the average gap between the cage and carrier.
Add 0.3 mm (0.012 inch) to the average gap that was determined in step 12. This is the thickness of the shims that must be installed. This will give a cold bearing setting of 0.05 mm (0.002 inch) to 0.125 mm (0.005 inch) of end play.
Remove the cage and reinstall the cage with the correct shim pack thickness.
Install new bolts and new washers. Tighten to a torque of 55 10 N m (41 7 lb ft).
Ensure that the transfer gear rotates freely.
