The Implement pump (1) is located under the hood. The implement pump is bolted to the right side of the torque converter housing. From the drive end of the pump, the rotation is in the counterclockwise direction.

Gear Pump (Implement)

The implement pump is a two-section pump with one inlet port (A) and one outlet port (B). The two sections of the pump use common inlet (A). The two sections also have a common outlet for high pressure. Coupling (7) connects the drive gear for the first section to the drive gear for the second section.

A gear pump carries oil from inlet port (A) to outlet port (B) in the spaces between the gear teeth.Drive shaft (5) turns drive gears (6) and (8). Idler gears (10) and (11) mesh with drive gears (6) and (8) as the gears rotate.When the gear teeth separate, a partial vacuum is formed. Oil fills the spaces between the teeth in inlet port (A). The gears carry oil around the circumference of the pump to outlet port (B). Oil is forced out of the spaces between the gear teeth as the gears mesh on the outlet port (B).The displacement of the pump is equal to the space between the teeth, multiplied by the number of spaces which pass in one revolution of the drive shaft. The number of spaces are equal to the number of teeth on each gear. The output will double with the volume that is developed by having two gears. The displacement of the pump is equal to the speed of the pump times the volume of one revolution of the pump. The output of oil is doubled because there are two sections to the pump.Oil will not return to inlet port (A) because the gears mesh in order to fill the spaces between the gear teeth.
