1. Install bearing cage (3) in the case without the O-ring seal and the shims.2. Install a dial indicator to check the end play of the gear assembly. Install three of bolts (1) equal distance apart without the lockwashers.3. Tighten bolts (1) evenly until the end play of the gear assembly is zero.4. Measure the gap between the bearing cage and the case at the three bolt locations with a feeler gauge. Make a record of the gap measured.5. Remove the bearing cage.6. Install the O-ring seal on bearing cage (3). Put a small amount of oil on the seal.7. Install bearing cage (3) in the case with an amount of shims (2) so their thickness is .002 in. (0.05 mm) more than gap measured in Step 4. 8. Install bolts (1) with lockwashers. Tighten the bolts evenly.9. Measure the end play again. The end play must be ... .001 to .003 in.(0.03 to 0.08 mm).
