Monitoring parameters are not activated until the engine's rpm has reached low idle, which could lead to damage of the engine. Some parameters are not active when the engine is started and the engine is operated at speeds that are below low idle in a direct fuel control mode. The direct fuel control mode uses an analog switch that allows the operator to directly control the engine rpm. This control can be set to allow the engine to operate below the programmed low idle set point. If the control is set below low idle severe damage could occur to the engine before the engine shutdown is activated.Solution
Adjust the low idle set point to the lowest setting by using Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET). This set point will depend on the flash file that is being used as well as the engine model. This will minimize the rpm range when the parameters are not active. Direct fuel control mode controls the engine rpm with an external governor. The components of the signal converter must be installed in order to operate in direct fuel control mode. The configuration parameter must be programmed to ON in order for the Electronic Control Module (ECM) to respond to the external governor.Note: Always maintain the oil level between the "ADD" and the "FULL" marks on the "Engine Stopped" side of the oil level gauge.
