Operate tractor long enough to warm the oil. Stop engine and lock brakes.1. Remove fill and drain plugs. Allow oil to drain.2. Clean and install drain plugs.3. Fill compartment with oil to level of fill plug openings.4. Clean and install fill plugs.(13)Transmission
Operate tractor long enough to warm the oil. Stop engine.1. Remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain.2. Remove breather cap and wash in clean solvent.3. Install drain plug and fill compartment. See Refill Capacities. Maintain oil level to full mark on dipstick.4. Install breather cap.5. Start engine and check oil level.(14)Universal Joint

Operate tractor long enough to warm the oil. Stop engine and lock brakes. Some oil, due to seal seepage, may be present when outside drain plugs are removed. If an excessive amount of oil is present, consult your Caterpillar dealer.1. Remove drain plugs. Allow oil to drain.2. Remove breather cap and wash in clean solvent.3. Clean and install drain plugs.4. Fill compartment. See Refill Capacities. Check oil level.5. Install breather cap.(16)Hydraulic System
Operate tractor long enough to warm the oil. Stop engine and lock brakes.Remove cap slowly to relieve pressure.1. Open drain valve and allow oil to drain.2. Remove and discard breather, install a new one.3. Close drain valve.4. Fill compartment. See Refill Capacities. Check oil level.5. Start engine and check oil level. Check and adjust valves with engine stopped.Rotate flywheel in direction of normal rotation.1. Remove valve cover.2. Remove plug from flywheel housing. Turn flywheel to close No. 1 inlet and exhaust valves and allow a 3/8" N.C. timing bolt of proper length to be inserted through flywheel housing into flywheel. Turn engine slowly when installing bolt.
Do not use starter to turn engine.
Check lash of No. 1 and No. 2 inlet valves.Check lash of No. 1 and No. 3 exhaust valves.Adjust valves if necessary. See below.3. Remove bolt and turn flywheel 360° to close No. 4 exhaust and inlet valves.Check lash of No. 3 and No. 4 inlet valves.Check lash of No. 2 and No. 4 exhaust valves.4. Start engine and run at low idle. Check valve rotators. If valves do not rotate, see your Caterpillar dealer.5. Stop engine and install valve cover. Tighten bolts to 6 to 10 lb. ft. (0,83 to 1,39 mkg), in sequence shown. DO NOT overtighten.Adjust valves if necessary.Remove bolt from flywheel and install plug in flywheel housing.To Adjust Valve Lash:
1. Loosen adjusting screw locknut.2. Turn adjusting screw in to close gap, out to open gap. See page 13 for correct valve lash.3. Hold adjusting screw and tighten locknut to 24 5 lb. ft. (3,32 0,69 mkg).4. Recheck adjustment.5. Remove bolt from flywheel and install plug in flywheel housing.6. Install rocker arm cover. See above for correct bolt tightening sequence and torque.
