Information:

This diagnostic code is recorded when the electronic control module (ECM) for the Payload Control System (PCS) identifies a system voltage that is below 9 VDC.The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed:
The system voltage remains low for an extended time after the engine is started.
There is a connection with high impedance between the battery and the ECM.
There is a connection with high impedance between the ECM and system ground.
One set of batteries is disconnected with the key in the ON position. Also, the engine must not be running.Test Step 1. CHECK THE +BATTERY VOLTAGE
Start the engine.
Ensure that the diagnostic code is still active.
Run the engine at high idle for several minutes.
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position.
Measure the +battery voltage at the battery terminals. Note: Use a calibrated digital multimeter.Expected Result:The voltage should be greater than 9 DCV.Results:
YES - The voltage is greater than 9 DCV. The battery voltage is correct. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NO - The voltage is less than 9 DCV. The charging system is not operating correctly.Repair: Check the charging system. Refer to the Service Manual module in the engine section Testing and Adjusting, "Starting And Charging System" for the machine that is being serviced.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE +BATTERY VOLTAGE AT THE ECM
Turn the key start switch to the ON position. Run the engine at high idle.
Locate the connector for the ECM.
Measure the voltage between contact 1 (wire 138-GN(Green)) and contact 2 (wire 251-BK(Black)).
Turn the key start switch to the OFF position. Expected Result:The voltage is less than 9 DCV.Results:
YES - The voltage is less than 9 DCV. The harness has failed.Repair: Repair the harness or replace the harness.STOP
NO - The voltage is greater than 9 DCV. The system voltage is correct.Repair: It is unlikely that the ECM has failed. Perform the previous steps again. If the cause of the problem is not found, contact your dealership's Technical Communicator for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time and repair costs. If the cause of the diagnostic code is not found and the ECM must be replaced, refer to the Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace" Story in this manual for details.STOP
