Communication between Machine ECM (3), Power Train ECM (1), and Engine ECM (2) is conducted over data link circuits. The data link circuits are bidirectional, allowing each ECM to send and receive information. ECMs support two types of data links:
Cat Data Link (5) is used to send system status information between ECMs and CAT Electronic Technician (ET). Power Train ECM (1), Engine ECM (2) and Machine ECM (3) communicate over CAT Data Link (5)
CAN Data Link (4) is used for high speed system operation and communication between ECM controls and other machine system ECMs. Power Train ECM (1), Engine ECM (2), Machine ECM (3), Keypad Switches, Instrument Cluster (7) and Monitor Display Module communicate over the CAN Data LinkNote: In the event of a failure of CAN Data Link (4), CAT Data Link (5) is used as a back-up for operational communication.Other components on the machine use the data links for communication. Monitor display (6), instrument cluster (7), keypad 1 (8) and keypad 2 (9) communicate with the other ECMs over the CAN Data Link.Several of the ECMs have the same part number. Each of these ECMs with the same part number are assigned a location code. This location code tells the ECM what functions will be performed. The location code is enabled by grounding pin 26 and pin 32 on J1 connector. The ECMs can be flashed with a file that is not correct for the location code.Note: The Machine ECM flash file can be downloaded to the Power Train ECM. If the flash files do not match the location code, a diagnostic code will be activated. Also, the ECM will not respond correctly to inputs and output for the specific system.
