Information:

Use this procedure to determine if the multitorque feature is working correctly. There are no diagnostic codes for the multitorque feature. Background InformationThe multitorque feature is optional. The feature provides two different torque curves for the engine. The torque curve for the lower gears functions as a standard engine. The torque curve for the top gears provides additional torque. Typically, the additional torque is approximately 136 N m (100 lb ft).The Engine Control Module (ECM) determines when the vehicle is in the top gears by sensing the ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed. The engine operates with the higher torque curve if the ratio of engine speed to vehicle speed is above a trip point. The trip points are listed below.
MT-A Ratio is 21.9 rpm/mph & below (Top 1 Gear)
MT-B Ratio is 33.0 rpm/mph & below (Top 2 Gears)
MT-C Ratio is 38.0 rpm/mph & below (Top 2 Gears)Note: The "PTO Torque Limit" overrides the multitorque feature. This protects the equipment that is powered by the PTO from excessive torque.Access the "Instantaneous Screen" if the vehicle is equipped with the Messenger (Driver Information Display). This screen shows the status of the multitorque feature in order to determine if the multitorque feature is activating.Test Step 1. Repair all Diagnostic Codes
Repair any active diagnostic codes before you begin this procedure.
Investigate any logged codes. Resolve the logged codes, if necessary. Expected Result:There are no active codes or logged codes that require repair. Results:
OK - There are no active codes or logged codes that require repair. Proceed to Test Step 2.
Not OK - Active codes or logged codes require repair.Repair: Make the necessary repairs.Proceed to Test Step 2 after the repairs are complete.Test Step 2. Verify that the Software is Installed
Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the ECM.
Observe the value of the "Rating Type" in the customer specified parameters. Expected Result:"Rating Type" indicates "Multitorque".Results:
OK - "Rating Type" indicates "Multitorque". Proceed to Test Step 3.
Not OK - "Rating Type" does not indicate "Multitorque". The engine is not equipped with the multitorque feature. No further repairs are required.STOPTest Step 3. Verify a Change in the Rated Fuel Limit
Put the vehicle on a dynamometer or take the vehicle for a road test.
Operate the vehicle in the lower gears at an approximate engine speed of 1200 rpm. A load on the engine is not required.
Read the "Rated Fuel Limit" and record the "Rated Fuel Limit" from the status screen on Cat ET.
Operate the vehicle in the top gear at 1200 rpm. Read the "Rated Fuel Limit" and record the "Rated Fuel Limit". Expected Result:The "Rated Fuel Limit" in the top gear is greater than the "Rated Fuel Limit" in the lower gears. Results:
OK - The "Rated Fuel Limit" in the top gear is greater than the "Rated Fuel Limit" in the lower gears. The multitorque feature is operating correctly.STOP
Not OK - The "Rated Fuel Limit" in the top gear is not greater than the "Rated Fuel Limit" in the lower gears. The multitorque feature is not operating
