Adjustment of the Free Movement (Backlash) for the Power Shift
Install the transmission or bevel gear (3). See Illustration 1.
Install a dial indicator so that the indicator tip is on one tooth of the pinion.
Install a block of wood between bevel gear (8) and the bevel gear case in order to keep the pinion from turning.
Push the pinion toward the front of the machine as far as possible. Move the pinion clockwise and move the pinion counterclockwise. The free movement (backlash) is the difference between the values that are read on the dial indicator.
Measure the backlash at four points around the bevel gear in order to find the location of the smallest backlash.Note: Make sure that the pinion is held as far toward the front of the machine as possible in order to get the correct measurement.
The correct free movement (backlash) is 0.38 mm + 0.10 - 0.08 mm (0.015 + 0.004 - 0.003 inch).
If the backlash is too large, remove shims (3) that are behind bearing cage (4). Install the shims that were removed behind bearing cage (7) .
If the backlash is too small, remove some of shims (1) that are behind bearing cage (7). Install the shims that were removed behind bearing cage (4) .Note: If you move the shims from one side to the other side the bearing adjustment will not change. You must keep the same amount of shims.Adjustment Procedure for the Bearings on the Bevel Gear Shaft (Direct Drive)

Illustration 3 g00618025
Install bevel gear shaft (8) without bevel gear (3) if the transmission is installed in the machine. Install bevel gear shaft (8) with bevel gear (3) if the transmission is removed from the machine.
Install bearing cage (4) with a full package of shims (9). Evenly tighten a minimum of three bolts (10) without the lockwashers. The thickness of a full shim pack (9) is 3.02 mm to 3.18 mm (0.119 inch to 0.125 inch).
Install bearing cage (7) without shims (6) .
Install bolts (5) without lockwashers.
While bevel gear shaft (8) is slowly turned, tighten a minimum of three bolts (5) evenly. Tighten the bolts until the needed torque for rotation of shaft (8) is 8.8 0.8 N m (77 7 lb in).
Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between the flange of bearing cage (7) and the face of the bevel gear case. Measure the distance at each of bolts (5) around cage (7). Make sure that the measurement at each bolt is the same distance.
Remove bearing cage (7) .
Install a shim pack (6) that is equal in thickness to the distance in Step 6. Install bearing cage (7) and bolts (5) with the lockwashers. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 135 14 N m (100 10 lb ft).
Install bolts (10) with the lockwashers. Tighten bolts (10) to a torque of 135 14 N m (100 10 lb ft).
To check for the correct bearing adjustment, turn the bevel gear shaft at 300 rpm to 400 rpm for
