Information:

4. Measure distance (A) which is the existing total clearance.5. Determine the thickness of shim(s) that needs to be removed from shim group (1) installed at location (B), by calculating as follows. Thickness of shims to be removed:Total clearance (A) - [0.5 to 1.0 mm (.02 to .04 in)]6. Remove an appropriate number of shim(s), meeting the above calculation. Be sure to use a minimum of three 0.5 mm (.02 in) shims. To remove shims, remove bolts (4), washers (5) and plate (3).7. After correct number of shims have been removed, install plate (3), washers (5) and bolts (4) with pin (2) aligned with pin hole. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 100 20 N m (70 15 lb ft).8. After installation, make sure that clearance (A) is still correct.Cab Heater/Air Conditioner (If Equipped)
Clean Air Filter Element
An air filter element plugged with dust will result in decreased performance and service life of the cab heater or air conditioner (if equipped). To prevent decreased performance, clean the air filter element, as required.
The air filter element is located behind the seat.Use the following procedure to clean the air filter element. 1. Move the back of the seat forward until there is enough space to gain access to the filter cover.2. Remove the screws that hold the filter cover in place.3. Remove the filter cover.4. Remove the air filter.5. Clean the filter element using pressure air or water.6. Inspect the filter after cleaning. If it is damaged or badly contaminated, use a new filter element. Before installing a filter element, make sure it is dry.7. Reverse Steps 1-4 for air filter element installation.Tracks
Check/Adjust
Grease is under high pressure.Grease coming out of the relief valve under pressure can penetrate the body causing injury or death.Do not watch the relief valve to see if grease is escaping. Watch the track or track adjustment cylinder to see if the track is being loosened.Loosen the relief valve one turn only.If track does not loosen, close the relief valve and contact your Caterpillar dealer.
Keeping the track properly adjusted will increase the service life of the track and drive components. The track tension has to be set as required by the current operating conditions. Use as slack a track as possible if the soil is heavy, while avoiding short radius turns whenever possible.
Measuring Track Tension
1. Place a straight edge, long enough to reach from the idle wheel (or final drive) to the carrier roller, on the tracks.2. Measure the maximum amount of track sag from the high point of the track grouser to the bottom of the straight edge. Properly adjusted track will have approximately 20 to 35 mm (3/4 to 1 3/8 in) slack.Track Tightening
Wipe the fill valve fitting before lubricating. 1. Add grease through fill valve fitting (1) until the correct track tension is reached.2. Operate the machine back and forth to equalize the pressure.3. Check the amount of track sag again and adjust as necessary.Track Loosening
1. Loosen relief valve (2) carefully (one turn maximum)
