Remove the valve mechanism cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Valve Mechanism Cover - Remove and Install".
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove plugs (2) and (3) .
Drain the engine oil from the cylinder head oil gallery into a suitable container for storage or disposal.Note: Remove the engine oil from the cylinder head oil gallery with the engine in a vertical position on an engine stand. If the engine is in the machine or chassis then go to Step 3.
Remove injection actuation pressure (IAP) sensor (1). Apply a maximum air pressure of 35 kPa (5 psi) to the IAP sensor port in order to remove engine oil from the cylinder head oil gallery.

Remove shoulder bolt (4), socket head bolt (5) and injector deflector (6) from hold down bracket (7) .

Note: When possible, remove the unit injector by hand by twisting the unit injector and pulling upward.
Position Tool (A) under the hold down bracket (7) on unit injector (8) if you are not able to remove the unit injector by hand. Carefully pry unit injector (8) out of the cylinder head assembly. Remove unit injector (8). Disconnect the plug for the wiring harness from the unit injectors.Note: The O-ring seals and backup rings must be replaced prior to installing the unit injectors. Observe the orientation of the O-ring seals and the backup rings prior to the removal.

Remove O-ring seals (9), cushion ring, and backup rings from the unit injector.Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS0184, "Removal and Installation Instructions For the 3126B HEUI Injector" for more information on the removal and installation of the unit injectors.
