Engine Starting Above 0°C (32°F)
Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your healthAlways start and operate the engine in a well-ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.
Move the parking brake control to the ENGAGED position. The parking brake control must be in the ENGAGED position before the engine will crank.
Move the transmission control to the N position. The transmission control must be in the N position before the engine will crank.
Adjust the steering column.
Move the hoist control to the HOLD position.
Turn the engine start switch to the ON position in order to check the Caterpillar Monitoring System for correct operation. .
Turn the engine start switch to the START position in order to start the engine. Release the engine start switch key when the engine starts.
Operate the engine at low idle until the Caterpillar Monitoring System verifies that the engine oil pressure is normal.Note: If the engine fails to start, return the engine start switch to the OFF position before you attempt to start the engine again.
Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before cranking again.Turbocharger (if equipped) damage can result, if the engine rpm is not kept low until the engine oil light/gauge verifies the oil pressure is sufficient.
Engine Starting Below 0°C (32°F) with Ether Starting Aid
The ether starting aid functions automatically under a combination of all of the following conditions :
The engine coolant temperature is below 0 degrees celsius.
The engine has been idling for less than 10 seconds.
The engine speed is below 500 rpm.If any of the above conditions are not met then manual control of the ether starting aid is necessary.Note: Refer to "Engine Starting Above 0°C (32°F)".

While you crank the engine, press the ether start aid switch.
Hold the ether starting aid switch for three seconds.
Release the ether starting aid switch. This will release a premeasured amount of ether into the air intake.
Excessive ether (starting fluid) can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
When the temperature is below -18°C (0°F), the use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended.Before you operate the machine below -23°C (-9°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer or refer to Special Publication, SEBU5895, "Cold Weather Recommendations" for additional information.
