Roller Buffer
The roller buffer machine, Illustration 1, is used to clean the rollers before they are welded with the welding machine. (Most of the dirt and grit must be removed first with steam or high pressure water.)
Illustration 1. Roller buffer machine to clean rollers after most of the dirt and grease has been removed. The roller buffer is basically a drive roller and an idler roller that holds the track roller. An electric motor with potentiometer speed control runs the drive roller. Another electric motor runs a set of brushes in the hood. The weight of the hood gives enough pressure to clean the roller.
At times the center edges of single flange rollers become pushed over from wear. Remove this edge before welding. It can be easily cut off with a torch while the roller is turned in the buffer machine with the hood up and brush stationary.
The buffer cleans track rollers from all Caterpillar machines.
Special Instruction, SEHS7962-01, comes with the roller buffer. It has installation, maintenance and operating instructions, and parts service information. The machine will operate from either a 60 or 50 Hertz electrical supply. A wiring diagram is included that shows voltage connections for 208, 230, 380, or 460 volts.
Hydraulic Puller For Roller End Collars
The hydraulic puller to remove roller end collars consists of a hydraulic cylinder fastened on a metal bench that holds different sizes of track rollers. See Illustration 2. This gives a quick, easy method to disassemble the rollers so the seals and bushings can be inspected and measured. Disassembly is needed before welding if water cooling is used as shown in Undercarriage Reconditioning Guide Bulletin No. MP-3.
Illustration 2. Machine to take off roller end collars. The hydraulic power supply and hoses are not included with the puller. You can use either the Caterpillar 3S6224 (115V) or 3S8033 (230V) Pump Group, and two 8F24 Hose Assemblies 1830 mm (72") long. Either pump fits easily in the side shelf as shown.
The end collar puller can be used on track rollers for D4 through D9H Tractors.
Special Instruction, SEHS7961, comes with the end collar puller. It gives installation, maintenance and operating instructions, and parts service information.
Roller Dip Tank
The roller dip tank permits you to put a preservative on rebuilt rollers easily and rapidly. See Illustration 3. The preservative keeps rust off the roller and gives a more acceptable finished product.
A tank holds the preservative. A grate lowers and lifts the track roller in and out of the tank. The grate is moved by an air cylinder operated with a hand valve. The air cylinder needs 550 kPa (80 psi).
There is also a grate to put the rollers on so they can become dry. The tank holds all size rollers, including rollers for D10's.
Special Instruction, SEHS7960, comes with the dip tank. It has installation, maintenance and operating instructions, and parts service information.
Illustration 3. This dip tank is an easy, clean way to cover a rebuilt roller completely with a preservative.
