Information:

1. Follow steps 1 through 4 for "Engine Above 0°C (+32°F)." 2. Turn the start switch (1) to START.3. After cranking begins, push the ether starting aid control switch (2) UP and hold for three seconds (time is required to fill chamber). Ether is injected when aid switch is released. Use additional starting fluid about every two seconds until the engine is running smoothly. For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Operation & Maintenance Manual" for "Cold Weather Recommendations", Form SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting with an External Air Supply
Do not exceed 1035 kPa (150 psi), air pressure or damage to the air system can occur.
Before charging the air start tank from an external air supply, drain the water from the external air supply system.1. Remove the coupling cover. Connect the auxiliary air supply hose to fittings. Turn valve to open air lines.2. After the engine starts, close the valve. Remove the supply hose and install the cover.Engine Starting with Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump cables.Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect battery positive (+) to battery positive (+) and battery negative (-) to battery negative (-).Jump only with a battery source and with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise, they will operate when the jump source is connected.
When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This could prevent damage to engine bearings and electrical circuits.Turn on (close) the disconnect switch prior to the boost connection to prevent damage to electrical components on the stalled machine. This machine has a 24 volt starting system. Use only equal voltage for jump starting. Use of a welder or higher voltage will damage the electrical system.Severely discharged maintenance free batteries might not fully recharge by the alternator alone after jump starting. The batteries must be charged to the proper voltage by the battery charger. Many batteries thought to be unusable, are still rechargeable.Refer to Special Instructions, form SEHS7633, Battery Test Procedure, available from your Caterpillar dealer, for complete testing and charging information.
Use of Jumper Cables
When auxiliary start receptacles are not available, use the following procedure.1. Make initial determination as to failure of machine to crank. Refer to special instruction SEHS7768 on use of 6V2150 Starting/Charging Analyzer Group. Procedure applies even if machine does not have diagnostic connector.2. Place the transmission control in NEUTRAL on the stalled machine. Engage the parking brake. Move all
