SUBJECT: INSTALLATION AND REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE FOR GREASED LINKAGE PIN JOINTS ON 992G WHEEL LOADERS
PROBLEM: Failure to properly lubricate the components before assembly can result in pin galling.
The inner bore of the bearings for the pins is coated with a black crystalline material that aids in the break in process of the bearing for the pin. If a pin is replaced, the bearings should also be replaced. The bearings can be replaced without replacing the pin if the pin is in good condition.
Thoroughly clean all components. New bearings should be cooled to a temperature of -100°F (-73°C) before assembly.
Apply RTV silicone to each end of the bearing spacer before installing the spacer between the first and the second bearing.
Coat the pin and the inner diameter of both bearings with clean 80-90w gear oil before assembling the pin joint.
Assemble the pin joint. Tighten the M36 bolts at the A, B, and C pins per TIBU3742. Tighten all other M36 bolts to a torque of 2700 N.m
Each joint should be filled with the recommended grease for the expected ambient temperature with the vent ports open. Fill the joint until a steady flow of grease exits at the lowest port Install the vent plug in the lowest port. Continue to add grease until a steady stream of grease exits the second port. Install the relief valve and add grease until a steady stream of grease exits the relieve valve.
The grease supply pressure at the inlet fitting should not exceed 700 psi to avoid damage to the Face Seals. If a Face Seal is blown while filling or refilling a joint, the joint must be disassembled to replace the damaged seal. Refer to REHS1349 for more information on the Autolube system.
Break-in Procedure
Starting with the bucket level on the ground slowly, at half engine speed, raise the bucket to full height, rack back completely, dump, then return to level on the ground, apply down pressure on bucket to raise the front wheels and return to level on the ground.
Add grease, manually with daily lube or by manually cycling the autolube system, until a steady flow of grease exits all the relief ports or through the seals at the C and E pin joints.
Slowly cycle the linkage four more times with an empty bucket going through the full motion with down pressure as described in step 1. After completion add grease as described in step 2.
Fill the bucket half full from a stock pile and slowly raise to full lift, return to the ground line, and apply down pressure. Repeat this procedure five times with a 30 sec pause between each cycle. Again add grease as described in step 2.
Repeat step 4. with a full bucket load of loose material.
Listen for any pin noise while performing the break-in procedure and inspect all joints after the procedure to be sure that grease is only exiting at the relief port or through the lip seals at the C and E pin joints.
